Pregnancy is a beautiful and transformative experience, but it can also bring its fair share of challenges, especially when it comes to staying active. If your pregnancy journey has been anything like mine, you understand the struggle of battling through nausea, fatigue, and, later, the discomfort of a growing belly pressing on your back and hips. However, through my own experiences, I've learned firsthand the immense benefits of staying active and mobile throughout pregnancy.
During my first pregnancy, I'll admit that I didn't prioritize movement as much as I should have. I ignored the signs my body was giving me and, as a result, suffered from extreme pain in my hips and lower back towards the end. I was miserable and vowed not to let the same happen during my second pregnancy.
With determination and a newfound understanding, I made daily movement a priority. I enrolled in a 10-week prenatal Pilates course and committed to staying active even on the toughest days. Of course, there were days, especially in the first trimester, where I was simply in survival mode, and on those days, I listened to my body and focused on rest and nourishment.
However, what surprised me was how movement, even in small doses, made a significant difference in how I felt. As someone in the healthcare profession, I often found myself teaching yoga classes or demonstrating exercises to patients, and each time, I noticed a positive shift in my own well-being.
I also made sure to establish care with a healthcare professional who could assist me with the various aches and pains that accompany pregnancy. I utilized resources like acupuncture, physical therapy, dry needling, massage, and chiropractic care to address any discomfort and enable me to continue staying active safely.
By focusing on strengthening and stretching exercises tailored to my pregnancy, I was able to alleviate almost all of the pain in my SI joint by the end of my second pregnancy. Building strength in my pelvic floor, core, and hips proved to be crucial, and the payoff was immense.
My journey taught me that staying active during pregnancy isn't just about physical health; it's also about mental and emotional well-being. Moving my body helped me feel more connected to the incredible process unfolding within me and empowered me to embrace the changes with confidence.
To all expecting mothers out there, I encourage you to prioritize movement during your pregnancy journey. Listen to your body, seek support from healthcare professionals, and find activities that bring you joy and comfort. Your future self will thank you for the investment in your health and well-being during this transformative time.
