Frequently Asked Questions
-
What is Hyaluronic Acid?Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance that your body produces. Scientists have found hyaluronic acid throughout the body, especially in eyes, joints, and skin. It acts as a lubricant and shock absorber inside of joints. As we continue to age, our bodies begin to produce less of this lubricating substance, increasing the likelihood of arthritis forming.
-
How is Hyaluronic Acid made?Hyaluronic acid is often produced by fermenting certain types of bacteria. Rooster combs (the red, Mohawk-like growth on top of a rooster’s head and face) are also a common source.
-
What is PRP and how does it work?PRP or Platelet-rich Plasma Injections have gained popularity as a regenerative treatment for various musculoskeletal conditions, including joint pain and injuries. PRP is derived from the patient's own blood and contains a concentrated amount of platelets, growth factors, and other healing components. When injected into damaged tissues or joints, PRP promotes tissue repair, reduces inflammation, and stimulates the body's natural healing processes. This therapy is minimally invasive and generally well-tolerated, offering potential benefits such as improved pain relief, enhanced joint function, and accelerated healing.
-
Are the injections painful?Minimal to no pain is involved; we use a numbing agent before the injection.
-
How long do the injections last? The series of injections last at least 6 months and can provide pain relief for up to a couple years after.
-
What is the success rate of this procedure? This procedure is highly-effective. 92.7% of patients report at least a 50% decrease in pain with increased function and mobility.
-
How many treatments will I need? The number of treatments will depend entirely upon the severity of your osteoarthritis. Most patients receive 3-5 treatments, however many experience some relief in symptoms after the first treatment.
-
Will I be able to drive myself home after the injections?Yes. You will be able to resume your normal daily activities except high impact activities for 48hrs after each injection, such as running, jumping, tennis.
-
Is there any downtime after the injections? For 48hrs after each injection, it is important to not perform high impact or strenuous activities involving the joint injected, including tennis.
-
When will I begin to notice improvement?Typically after the 2nd and 3rd injections.
-
How often do I need to receive the injections? As frequent as every 6 months to as infrequent as every 2 years or longer. It varies depending on a multitude of factors.
-
How much time will each visit take?Generally, each physical therapy session is about 45 minutes. On days of your injection, plan to spend about 10 to 15 additional minutes to go through the injection procedure. Plan on taking it easy and minimizing prolonged weight bearing activities for a few hours after your injection and the rest of that day, if possible. Ice should be applied to the knee throughout the injection day as well. Adhere to the treatment schedule as closely as possible to get the best results.
